The Red Sox acquired two interesting prospects along with starting pitcher Johan Oviedo in their five-player trade with the Pirates on Thursday.
Boston landed both 22-year-old catcher Adonys Guzman and 26-year-old left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego.
Guzman, a Bronx, N.Y. native, played at Boston College in 2023 before transferring to Arizona. He is known for his excellent arm and defensive skills.
Coming out of high school in 2022, Baseball America graded Guzman’s arm 80 (top of the scale) and his fielding 70 (plus plus) on its 20-80 grading scale.
Pittsburgh drafted him in the fifth round (144th overall) out of Arizona in July. His Baseball America draft scouting report noted , “Guzman remains a glove-first catcher whose swing is often a bit stiff and pull-oriented, though he
