DETROIT — Cleveland State's defense struggled to find any answers Thursday night in a surprising 76-68 loss to underdog Detroit Mercy in both teams' Horizon League opener.
The Titans entered the game with a record of just 1-5, but made a remarkable 58.7% of their shots while dominating on the glass and from the bench. Reserve center Addisen Mastriano led the way with 18 points on 8 of 10 shooting, and Myonna Hooper (12 points), Jasmine Edwards (11), and Makayla Jackson (10) each reached double figures.
Colbi Maples finished with a game-high 23 points, but the Vikings (7-2, 0-1 Horizon League) got off to a rough start after falling behind 23-14 in the first quarter. After CSU regained a 48-47 lead in the second half, Detroit went on a 10-0 run to take control for good.
