One of the longest serving members of the Onondaga County Legislature won’t seek reelection next year and instead will campaign for the open 126 th State Assembly District seat in Central New York.

David Knapp, R-LaFayette, told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard he will leave after 14 years in the legislature to run for the Assembly seat now held by Republican John Lemondes.

The seat will be open because Lemondes is challenging U.S. Rep. John Mannion , a Democrat from Geddes, in the 22 nd Congressional District election next year.

Knapp, a farmer and Army veteran, becomes the first candidate from either party to enter the race for the 126 th Assembly District . The district spans Onondaga County’s western and southern towns, and part of Cayuga County including the city of Aubur
