A year after the alleged murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione appeared in court for a pretrial hearing. The 27-year-old is accused of stalking and fatally shooting Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk. During the hearing, a police officer identified Mangione as the suspect during his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Patrolman Tyler Frye, who was a probationary officer at the time, pointed out Mangione in the courtroom. "He’s the gentleman right there sitting between the female and the male. Looks like he’s wearing a suit," Frye said.
Mangione's defense team is seeking to exclude key evidence from the trial, including the alleged murder weapon and a journal found in his backpack. They argue that this evidence was obtained without a warrant during his arrest, which they claim violates his rights.
In court, Mangione appeared disengaged, flipping a pen and writing on a legal pad while body camera footage of his arrest was shown. The footage captured Frye responding to a call from a McDonald's manager who reported a suspicious individual resembling the shooting suspect.
As the video played, officers were seen engaging Mangione in casual conversation about food while he ate a hash brown. When asked about the situation, Mangione replied, "We’re going to find out I guess." He provided a fake New Jersey ID under the name Mark Rosario before officers informed him he was under investigation.
Frye documented Mangione's real name and date of birth in his notebook after reading him his Miranda rights. The prosecution is focused on the backpack, which contained a 3D-printed gun and a red notebook.
During the hearing, prosecutor Joel Seidemann questioned Frye about the backpack's location. Frye confirmed he was aware of it upon entering the scene.
The outcome of this hearing could significantly impact the prosecution's case, as it may determine whether crucial evidence can be used against Mangione. The proceedings are expected to continue into next week, providing further insight into the case against him.
