FAYETTEVILLE, NY – Julia and Dave Marshall admit they were a “bit naïve” when they took on their renovations of the Vernacular Greek Revival at 119 Elm Street, Fayetteville, in 1997.
That was 28 years ago.
The home, built sometime around 1870, had holes in the roof, sagging plaster, and four layers of kitchen tile so thick that you literally had to step down into the breakfast room.
“But we were committed,” Julia said this week. “We enjoyed the work. It was a labor of love.”
The couple were looking to move back to the village in 1997. Dave grew up there.
The neighborhood featured many of the amenities they were looking for. There were sidewalks, great schools, and easy walks to the elementary school and library (which has since moved).
