Tributes are being paid to a Holocaust survivor and prominent Jewish community elder after his death aged 97. Itzik Alterman, a much-loved father and grandfather from Whitefield , Bury , passed away on Thursday morning.

Known as Ike, he survived four Nazi concentration and death camps and was awarded a British Empire Medal in 2023 for his services to Holocaust education and remembrance.

A passionate orator, he was an inspiration to all those who heard him speak. He worked tirelessly to document his life and story to educate the young about the Nazi atrocities - and penned his experiences in a series of books as part of Prestwich charity The Fed's My Voice project.
