A wanted woman who got "lost" inside a Virginia Publix ended up behind bars after a strange scene played out in one of the aisles at the busy store.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, deputies from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office were called to the supermarket at 1640 Publix Way to conduct a welfare check involving a woman acting strangely inside the store, officials said.

Upon arrival, deputies said that they were advised that the woman believed she was lost.

Deputies said the woman was giving vague answers to questions as they attempted to figure out what was going on. While speaking with the deputy, officials said the woman picked up a pack of candles that belonged to the store and began opening them.

Deputies said the woman provided a name and date of birth, but further investigation revealed the information was false. Her true identity was confirmed as Sara Sims, 45, of Stafford, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sims was wanted in Spotsylvania County for failure to appear.

Deputies said Sims was arrested and charged with:

  • Public intoxication;
  • Destruction of property;
  • Providing false identity to avoid arrest;
  • Providing false identity to law enforcement.

Sims was also served on her outstanding warrant from Spotsylvania and was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
