Concerns over the number of hospital operations cancelled by NHS Scotland have been raised by a West Dunbartonshire councillor following the release of recent figures. Statistics revealed by Public Health Scotland (PHS) earlier this week show that during October 2025 2,601 (9.3%) planned operations were cancelled the day before or on the day the patient was due to be treated by NHS Scotland.
This is higher than the rates reported during October 2024 and October 2019 which showed that 2,155 and 2,468 of planned operations were cancelled respectively.
Of all planned operations during October 2025 in NHS Scotland, 783 – just 3% – were cancelled by the patient but 894 were cancelled by the hospital due to capacity or non-clinical reasons while 96 were cancelled for other reasons.
