Two babies in Massachusetts have been diagnosed with botulism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The announcement of the two cases comes amid a nationwide botulism outbreak linked with contaminated formula.

Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves, according to the CDC.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning last week of contaminated baby formula from the company ByHeart. The company’s website acknowledged the contamination and reads that there is a self-initiated recall underway.

This week, the CDC announced that 39 infants , including the two from Massachusetts, had been diagnosed with botulism.
