December 5, 1972 - Omaha native Johnny Rodgers became the first Husker to win the Heisman Trophy.
The winner was announced on December 5, 1972.
During his senior season, Rodgers recorded 1,978 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns and helped the team to an appearance in the Orange Bowl.
Rodgers also helped the team to the first two national titles in school history in 1970 and 1971.
