Chatham-Kent has launched its Next Generation 911, and there’s more to come once the rest of Canada catches up.
The municipality went live with NG911 Monday morning, a digital system which improves how residents can connect with emergency services.
There is a quicker transfer of information with the new system, which is important said Chatham-Kent police Chief Kirk Earley, because “seconds are going to save lives.”
NG911 pinpoints from where a cellphone call is coming within 3 metres (about 10 feet) down from the previous 30 metres (100 feet).
Sarah VandenBrand, interim project manager for NG911, said “now that we’ve gone digital, as the cellphone moves we are seeing that on our mapping capabilities as well.”
