A major fire broke out at a chemical godown on the ground floor of a multi-storied building in the densely populated Gulshan Colony area of Anandapur in eastern Kolkata on Thursday night. No casualties were reported, official sources said.
According to sources, residents safely evacuated the building before firefighting vehicles arrived, preventing any casualties. Two fire trucks were deployed to tackle the blaze, which was first noticed around 10 p.m, sending thick black smoke across the locality.

Fire personnel had to use foam to contain the fire, which was brought under control in about an hour.
