PROSPECT PARK — THE CITY GOVERNMENT this week announced plans to invest $68 million to expand Prospect Park’s capacity to absorb stormwater, aiming to curb chronic flooding in Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Prospect Park South and Ditmas Park, reports Gothamist .

As part of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Bluebelt program, the project will add two new ponds, rain gardens, redesigned landscapes and upgraded drainage to divert water from Flatbush Avenue into Prospect Park Lake.

Officials say stormwater currently fails to drain properly during downpours, contributing to flash floods – a problem spotlighted by 2023’s Tropical Storm Ophelia, which inundated the Prospect Park Zoo. Construction is expected to finish in 2032.
