LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Roy Kramer, the one-time coach of East Lansing High School who rose through the ranks to become commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and helped transform college football, has died. He was 96.
Kramer coached at East Lansing and four other Michigan high schools before going on to become head coach at Central Michigan University, when the program was still in Division II. He led the Chippewas to the D-II national championship in 1974.
“Roy Kramer set the standard and raised the bar in intercollegiate athletes,” CMU Athletic Director Amy Folan said in a press release Friday. “His impact is immeasurable and has been felt for decades and his legacy will continue in perpetuity.
