OTTAWA — A federal union has reported that hundreds of public sector employees have been notified of potential job cuts as the government seeks to reduce the size of the public service. The Public Service Alliance of Canada announced that 219 employees at Natural Resources Canada received notices this week indicating their positions may be eliminated.
In addition, 109 employees at the Public Service Commission of Canada, 92 at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, and 74 at the Department of Finance also received similar warnings.
The federal government aims to cut approximately 40,000 jobs from the public service, which peaked at 368,000 positions during the 2023-24 fiscal year. Over the past year, about 10,000 jobs have already been eliminated from the federal public service.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada has expressed concerns that job losses at Natural Resources Canada could significantly impair Canada’s ability to manage its energy and natural resources effectively. The union's warnings highlight the potential impact of these cuts on the country’s resource management capabilities.
As the government moves forward with its plans, the future of these positions remains uncertain, and the union continues to advocate for the affected workers.
