WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - It’s the American dream, owning a home. Maybe you see kids coming to your door for Halloween. Maybe it’s a garage where you can tinker with your car. Or a big yard, where the dog can run around. But for many, it’s just that: a dream.
“New York State has one of the highest closing costs in purchasing a home, so that in itself is detrimental to some people that just can’t even afford to buy a home because they can’t afford closing cost and 20 percent down,” said Karen Peebles, president of the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Realtors.
Peebles and other realtors are pushing for the First-Time Homebuyer Savings Program to be passed by state lawmakers. It would allow first-time home buyers to set up a tax-deductible savings account. A married couple could contribute $10,
