The Region of Waterloo will not sign off on applications for new housing developments until it figures out how to fix a water distribution problem.

As it calculates future demand for water, the region has asked developers and municipal governments to share more information about where, when and what will be built for new housing, commercial and industrial developments.

From a high level, Mathieu Goetzke, the acting-chief administrative officer at the Region of Waterloo, says there is more development happening in Kitchener-Waterloo than in Cambridge, but the current water system will not allow the excess supply in Cambridge to be pumped where it is needed.

Possible solutions will cost millions and include a new pumping station or stations and new wells, among other improvements.
