ROCHESTER, Minn. - The recent misuse of a school email system was due to a configuration error, not a hack, said Superintendent Kent Pekel in a communication to the Rochester Public Schools community. A student exploited this error to send inappropriate content to many inboxes.
The district's Technology Department quickly corrected the error with Google's help and removed the offensive emails. Pekel assured that the responsible students have been identified and will face consequences according to district policies.
The district chose not to disable all student email accounts to maintain the learning environment. Pekel expressed regret for the exposure to inappropriate content and confirmed that security measures are now strengthened.
