FIFA has introduced a new award, the FIFA Peace Prize, and presented it to former U.S. President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup draw held in Washington, D.C. on December 5, 2025. This inaugural prize aims to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to peace and unity globally. FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded Trump with a gold trophy, a medal, and a certificate, praising him for his efforts in promoting peace around the world.
Infantino stated, "This is what we want from a leader – a leader that cares about the people," highlighting Trump's self-claimed role in brokering ceasefires and resolving conflicts in various regions, including Gaza and India-Pakistan. Trump expressed his gratitude, calling the award "one of the greatest honors of my life."
The establishment of the FIFA Peace Prize has sparked controversy. Human Rights Watch criticized the award, pointing out the lack of a transparent selection process, stating there were "no nominees and no jury" involved. Minky Worden, HRW’s global sports director, expressed concerns that the award could undermine the credibility of FIFA and trivialize genuine peace efforts, especially given ongoing human rights issues.
Despite the backlash, the FIFA Peace Prize represents a shift for FIFA, which has traditionally steered clear of political accolades. The award is seen as a way to enhance FIFA's global image while aligning with Trump's narrative as a peacemaker. The event also coincided with the announcement of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who acknowledged Trump's support for her cause during her acceptance speech.
