GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging caution on the state’s waterways this winter. DNR officials remind everyone that “no ice is safe ice.”
Early season ice is unpredictable and can change quickly. Last year, six people died after their recreational vehicles went through ice or into open water.
If you must venture onto the ice, you are reminded to drive slowly, keep windows down and ensure life jackets for all occupants.
The DNR also recommends carrying a cell phone, telling others where you’re going, and wearing a personal flotation device.
If you do fall through ice, remain calm, use hand-held spikes to pull yourself out, and call for help immediately.
