Jesse Marsch ’s Canadian soccer team has a much better idea of the World Cup challenge ahead after Friday’s draw in Washington.
Next summer’s co-hosts — who have never won a match at the men’s FIFA World Cup — will face the last host nation, Qatar, and Switzerland in Group B. But first they’ll take on the survivor from among four teams in the qualification playoffs in March. One of Italy, Northern Ireland, Wales and Bosnia will round out the group and take on the Canadians at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field rebranded for the tournament) on June 12. More of the Cup schedule dates will be announced Saturday.
