ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke woke up to its first snowfall of the season Friday morning, bringing enough accumulation for schools across the region to cancel classes.

The early winter weather gave families a surprise day off, and kids didn’t waste a minute before heading outside.

The snowfall left a light but steady blanket across neighborhoods and parks, creating ideal conditions for snowmen, snow angels, and sledding.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun… we’re building a snowman!” one group of girls said as they packed snow.

Children said the snow had the perfect texture for playing, calling it “good packing snow.” Others used the day to taste the flakes, describing the fresh snowfall as “scrumdilly umptious.”
