ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — An 11-year-old student who was reported missing after he ran out of his Atlanta public school on Friday has been found safe, his mother said.

Shortly before dismissal at David T. Howard Middle School, the boy left campus without permission, said a spokesperson for Atlanta Public Schools (APS).

On Friday night, the boy’s mother told Atlanta News First he was found safe at Emory Hospital Midtown, just over a mile and a half from the school.

School administrators, APS police and Atlanta police had been searching for him, the APS spokesperson said.

The boy’s mother said the boy has behavioral challenges and has a disciplinary record with the middle school.

He reportedly ran out of the school’s front office around 3 p.m. after his parents were on the way
