TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Explosions rocked the edge of Coronado National Memorial in southeastern Arizona on Wednesday as construction crews prepared for new border walls. The area is a crucial habitat for endangered jaguars and Mexican spotted owls, according to a video captured by the Center for Biological Diversity.
Blasts and dust clouds were present over critical habitat for the endangered beardless chinchweed plant. Crews are clearing the hills for border wall construction and quarrying rock to mix with concrete.
The Trump administration waived numerous environmental laws to speed up this construction. This comes just a day after images of a newly documented jaguar in southern Arizona were released, detected on remote cameras last month.
