WATERLOO, Iowa — Mike Fereday Heating and Air Conditioning in Waterloo reports that this cold snap has kickstarted their winter season, with workers experiencing one of their busiest days on Thursday as temperatures plummeted below zero.

HVAC Technician Gavin Stortz said, "We get a lot of different calls where it's sometimes working, sometimes isn't, or it's just completely not working. As far as old and new furnaces, it very much depends. I've worked on a furnace even today that was from 1976."

Technicians note that when homes face dangerously low temperatures, minor issues can quickly escalate into major breakdowns. They advise that these situations often arise when systems lack proper upkeep, exacerbated by extreme weather and insufficient routine maintenance.
