On the last day of his visit to China, French President Emmanuel Macron said he discussed the need for a “strong and lasting peace” in Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping and outlined Europe’s vision for ending the conflict.
Speaking to media on Friday at the end of a visit to the Sichuan University in Chengdu, Macron said China and Brazil were continuing work on a “Friends of Peace" group, and noted China’s close ties with Russia made the talks especially important.
He said Xi showed a willingness to support stability and consider European arguments for security guarantees that would prevent future attacks on Ukraine.
Macron also underscored the need for unity between Europe and the United States, saying both sides must work together on sanctions, frozen Russian assets and long-term security commitments.
He said that France, the U.S. and other allies have been coordinating closely on security guarantees for Ukraine, including plans to rebuild its military and provide reassurance forces.
Macron added that a lasting peace will require joint efforts from Europeans, Americans and other partners, including Canada, Australia and Japan.
