The A19 has been closed in both directions for nine hours following a serious crash.

The major route was shut around 11pm last night (December 5) between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout near Tynemouth and the A191 at Holystone.

Emergency services, including Northumbria Police, remain in attendance at the scene, with the road still closed this morning as investigations continue.

It is not yet known how many vehicles were involved in the crash or the nature of anyone's injuries.

National Highways North East has put diversions in place.

Northbound traffic is advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol:
