Singapore High Commissioner Simon Wong attended his staff member's wedding virtually after his IndiGo flight to Jharkhand was cancelled due to ongoing disruptions. Wong was set to travel from Delhi to Deoghar for the wedding but faced flight cancellations that left him unable to attend in person.
In a heartfelt gesture, he joined the celebrations online, dressed in traditional Indian attire. He shared clips of the event and expressed his best wishes for the newlyweds, stating, "Distance may divide us #IndiGoChaos, but Spirit #shaadi will unite us. Beta, congratulations, and may your marriage be a happy and blessed one." Wong also apologised to the staff member for his absence, sharing his frustration on social media about being among the many passengers affected by the flight cancellations.
IndiGo has faced significant operational challenges, resulting in over 1,000 flight cancellations in recent days. The airline attributed the crisis to unforeseen operational issues, including a pilot shortage and adjustments to the winter schedule. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has pointed to a lack of planning in implementing new flight duty regulations as a core reason for the disruptions.
As the situation continues to evolve, Delhi Airport has announced that flight operations are gradually returning to normal, urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. In response to the surge in passenger demand, South Central Railway has introduced special train services to various destinations. Wong's virtual attendance at the wedding has been praised as a touching diplomatic moment, showcasing his commitment to his staff's personal milestones despite the travel chaos.
