ON THIS DAY IN 1880 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The Committee on the Yorktown Centennial Celebration will hold a meeting in Washington on the 10th inst., to complete arrangements for the celebration. Congress appropriated $100,000 for the monument to commemorate the surrender of Cornwallis, and $20,000 to defray the expenses of the celebration. A site is to be selected at the meeting, from one of the surveyed plots, and the dedication of the monument will take place on the 19th of October, 1881.”
