GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Whiffs of funky aroma waltz through rows of Christmas ornaments, handcrafted gifts, and ethnic foods.
The unmistakable smell of Raclette Cheese has become part of holiday tradition in West Michigan as people flock to the Christkindl Markt at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market.
Over the course of the market season, which runs until Dec. 23, about 2,000 pounds of cheese are purchased and consumed.
Grand Rapids residents and longtime friends Allen Clark and Denise Sagansky make several trips to the market each year for raclette. The pair chases the salty bite before it disappears until next year.
“It’s okay if people don’t want it. It’s more for us,” Clark said. “The smell can be a little off-putting, but it’s fabulous once you dig in.”
