An act of Congress created The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) as a think tank seeking peaceful approaches to conflicts around the world.

“It was built as a symbol of the aspiration of the American people to be peace builders in the world,” said George Moose, former USIP Executive Director.

The law that created USIP allows the president of the United States to appoint and remove board members, but he must do so with the consent of the appropriate subcommittees of the Senate. Ignoring this requirement, Trump fired 11 of 15 USIP board members and cut its funding earlier this year. The Trump administration’s budget for next year eliminates federal funds for USIP.
