The Clarke County Welfare Board announced it would raise $2,500 for the year’s work by reaching out to various organizations, rather than through personal solicitations. Executive Chair Dr. Francis A. LaViolette noted the decision to increase the budget from $1,800 to $2,500 was made because of the “large number of persons assisted in one way or another during the past year.”

75 years ago

Vancouver welcomed two new residents, Laszlo and Judith Mathe. The Mathes had been displaced from Hungary due to ongoing conflict in Europe. The First Presbyterian Church helped bring the couple to Vancouver. Churchgoers raised money, found temporary employment, and helped the Mathes get a home. The church also held a welcoming reception when the couple arrived.
