UConn guard Kayleigh Heckel (9) defends against DePaulguard Sumer Lee (11).

STORRS, CT — The No. 1-ranked UConn women's basketball team welcomed back a legend, retiring Sue Bird's jersey at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 7.

After honoring the Hall of Famer, the Huskies went to work, dismantling DePaul, 102-35, and running their record to 9-0. UConn took a 40-point lead by halftime and never looked back.

Sarah Strong had 20 points, five steals, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Huskies. Azzi Fudd and Kayleigh Heckel added 16 points apiece and Jana El Alfy scored 11.

Strong and Fudd played for 36 minutes combined. UConn coach Geno Auriemma said he was impressed by how much they contributed in a short period.

"I sometimes marvel at how they get the shots they get," Auriemma said. "A lot of it has to do with they're talent, their understanding of our offense, how to get open.

"(They are) really efficient and that means a lot more to me, more than anything else, any stat."

The Blue Demons had 32 turnovers leading to 52 UConn points. The Huskies scored 60 points in the paint, compared to 10 for DePaul.

DePaul (2-8) had no players in double figures.
