Two people died and one was seriously injured in a collision involving a transport truck and a passenger vehicle on Hwy. 400 early Sunday morning. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the crash near Major Mackenzie Drive around 3:45 a.m. According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the passenger vehicle is believed to have been a rideshare car. At the scene, police found that two backseat occupants, both 30-year-old men from Bradford, were pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old man from Toronto, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition. The driver of the transport truck was not injured in the incident. Investigators believe the passenger vehicle was traveling northbound and may have been attempting to turn onto Teston Road when it lost control. The car reportedly struck a crash cushion separating the highway from the off-ramp, then bounced back into the highway lane, where it was hit by the northbound transport truck. Sgt. Schmidt noted that the roads were dry and bare at the time of the crash, although it had begun to snow shortly after. He stated, "I do not believe weather conditions were a factor at this time," and added that the investigation is ongoing. As a result of the collision, all northbound lanes on Hwy. 400 at Major Mackenzie Drive are closed. The on-ramp to the northbound lanes is also experiencing a lengthy closure. Police indicated that road closures are expected to remain in effect until noon as they continue their investigation, with a coroner and emergency services present at the scene.
