For the first time in program history, James Madison’s football team is headed to the College Football Playoff.

The CFP selection committee awarded the Dukes the No. 12 seed, sending them on the road to face No. 5 Oregon.

JMU (12-1) earned its spot by defeating Troy 31-14 on Friday night at Bridgeforth Stadium to win its first Sun Belt Conference championship and its first league title as an FBS program.

The CFP field includes the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams. JMU debuted in last week’s rankings at No. 25, raising the possibility that the ACC champion could be left out.
