T he Church teaches that from the very first moment of her existence, the Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved by God from original sin. This special grace was given to her through the saving work of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of all people. She received, in advance, the gift of salvation so she could be the pure and holy Mother of the Savior.

In 1854, through the document *Ineffabilis Deus*, Pope Pius IX formally confirmed this belief, which had long been held in the Church. Mary received this privilege not for herself alone, but because of her unique and sacred mission as the Mother of God.
