Bristol Live readers have heard that quality checks are falling far short across the hundreds of firms now caring for older and disabled people in Bristol. The council spends more than a quarter of a billion pounds a year on adult social care, yet a recent audit found little scrutiny of how that money is used.

About 5,500 people rely on these services. Most support is outsourced to roughly 500 providers, up from about 150 only a few years ago. Auditors warned this fast growing market is barely being monitored, a concern echoed by councillors.
