Gary Boyle, the township administrator for Perkins Township in Erie County, is hoping to construct a new central fire station with money from marijuana sales.
The problem is, he hasn’t actually seen any money from marijuana sales.
In November, 2023, Ohioans approved a ballot issue that legalized the sale of marijuana by state-licensed dispensaries for recreational use by adults 21 and older.
The law imposed a 10 percent tax levied on the sale of cannabis products with revenue distributed between host communities, addiction treatment, a social equity fund, and the state administrative overhead.
Of the 10 percent excise tax, townships and municipalities were expecting to see about 36 percent of that revenue.
