The social media feed celebrates dog ownership as visible proof of a good heart — dog parents playing fetch, documenting playtime sessions, and hashtagging ‘unconditional love’. But in Gujarat, rescuers see what happens when the signalling is done: dogs left tied to poles outside housing societies, dumped in parking lots and left at graveyards. Some are shut out of homes they once called their own, left to wait for owners who will never return. While dog adoptions have surged over the past five years, so too have cases of abandonment.
