COLUMBUS, Ohio -The sponsor of a bill vetoed by Gov. Mike DeWine that would allow young teens to work later during the school year said he wants to negotiate with the governor over their differences with the legislation.
DeWine vetoed state Senate Bill 50 on Wednesday night, saying he saw no compelling reason to deviate from the current law that requires 14- and 15-year-olds to stop working at 7 p.m. during the school year. He said he wants the teens focused on school.
The bill would have raised the limit to 9 p.m. In Ohio, companies can pay 14- and 15-year-olds the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, while adults generally earn a state minimum wage of $10.70, tied to inflation. It will rise to $11 an hour Jan. 1.
