Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse is poised to pay $50,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man whose van, carrying his three young children, was shot at by a city police officer during a 2017 chase.

The settlement, which is scheduled to be considered by the Common Council on Monday, would resolve a federal civil rights lawsuit brought by Peter Dixon against the city and eight Syracuse police officers.

Dixon alleged his constitutional rights were violated in 2017 when Officer Ahmad Mims fired five shots at his minivan, two of which hit the vehicle.

None of the bullets struck Dixon or the children, who were 4, 2 and 1 years old, records show.

In a letter to councilors, the city’s corporation counsel said the $50,000 payout is in the “best financial interest” of the city. Dixon originally sought
