As one of the most elusive and lesser-spotted birds in the UK, many may not realise that the large capercaillie roams forests in the UK. Towering over most native species and weighing in at up to five kilograms, the capercaillie is larger than a turkey, spectacular in appearance and can only be found in certain parts of northern Scotland.
Today, however, it is facing a critical threat of extinction, listed as a Red List species in the UK, with its population having declined by over 90% since the 1970s. Once widespread across Scotland and parts of northern England, this giant woodland grouse can now only be found in one corner of the country: the Caledonian Forest of the central Highlands. Conservationists warn that without urgent action, the capercaillie could disappear from Britain
