Pixel art is often dismissed as a lesser, low-effort form of graphical expression reserved for budget indie titles and nostalgic throwbacks.
One look at the recently announced Replaced should quickly dispel that notion. Yes, the action looks cool, and yes, the hook of playing an AI trapped in a human body hits all the classic cyberpunk notes, but my main takeaway from this trailer was more like "holy shit, that's the best pixel art I've ever seen."
Octopath Traveler-style 2.5D pixel art has been trending for a few years, but Replaced delivers the best execution I've seen yet. It combines traditional sprites with 3D spaces and soft lighting to give scenes genuine depth.
