Who is exempt from paying car tax
There are specific circumstances that mean drivers can be exempt from paying car tax, including certain types of vehicles or cars made before a certain year. Car tax - or Vehicle Excise Duty - is normally due every year, although there are options to spread out your payments .
The standard rate which is charged to all cars registered after April 2017 - excluding the first-year car tax rate for brand new vehicles - is currently £195 a year. There are different car tax rates for cars that were registered between March 1, 2001 and March 31, 2017. The lowest rate is £20 a year for vehicles that emit up to 100g/km of CO2, rising to £760 a year for vehicles that emit more than 255g/km of CO2.
