Dramatic video of Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii captured the moment a USGS camera was buried in a spectacular lava fountain.
The camera, located about 2,000 feet away from the volcano vent, captured the advancing lava fountain as it was swallowed up in the cloud of dirt and rocks. The camera was set up in a closed area of the park located on the south rim of Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea volcano in mid-2025.

The camera was buried in tephra, rock fragments ejected into the air Saturday during an eruption, from what the USGS said was an inclined lava fountain between 9:55 and 9:57 a.m. HST.
