ANN ARBOR, MI — Yumna Dagher, 23, would get scolded for bringing books to family gatherings.

The Spring 2025 University of Michigan graduate said as a kid she always had a book on her, a testament to her love for learning.

“I’ve always just been motivated by the acquisition and the connection of knowledge,” said Dagher, who grew up in Dearborn but has resided in Ann Arbor since 2021.

Dagher was one of 32 Americans chosen for the prestigious 2026 Rhodes Scholarship. She became the 33rd Rhodes Scholar from UM and will attend Oxford University next fall.

The Rhodes Scholarship has selected high-achieving college students every year to attend Oxford for free since 1902, according to its website .

Dagher completed double majors in English and environmental science studies at UM.
