CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. —

A Cherokee County, South Carolina, man was involved in a standoff with authorities after being accused of assaulting his wife and firing several shots toward her as she fled.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called Sunday to a home on Garner Creek Road.

On the way, deputies were told the suspect may be under the influence.

Deputies said the suspect, later identified as James Brian Moore, 46, was on the front porch when they arrived, wearing a bulletproof vest and telling them to get off his property.

Deputies said they also saw a pistol in Moore's back pocket.

Authorities said Moore eventually removed the gun from his pocket, took a bullet out of the chamber and placed the gun on the porch.
