The BJP on Tuesday launched a sharp counter-attack on the Trinamool Congress, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party of “serial hypocrisy" and “selective outrage" after the TMC criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for referring to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay as “Bankim da" during his speech in Parliament.
The TMC had earlier derided the Prime Minister’s remark as “cultural cosplay", claiming that no Bengali would casually use “da" for a revered figure like Bankim Chandra and calling PM Modi a “cultural illiterate" and an “appropriator."
The comment came after a TMC MP objected in the Lok Sabha when the Prime Minister used the colloquial suffix while commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, prompting PM Modi to correct himself and say “Bankim Babu".
