AMES – As the snow fell and the wind whipped, a small army descended upon the Ames Municipal Airport.
Eight inches of snowfall would typically be more than enough to divert a plane south to Des Moines, which is equipped to handle winter weather the much smaller Ames facility is not.
The night of Dec. 6, though, was not the typical circumstances.
