STATE COLLEGE — Matt Campbell walked to the podium to applause from family and friends peppering the first few rows and upper decks of Beaver Stadium’s media room. He paused for a moment, offered a thank you and delivered his first word.

“Um.”

Probably not what you’d expect from someone who’s spent 14 years as a Division I coach and done it at two different stops. He’s been through this movie before.

But that’s what came out Monday after his eight-year contract was approved earlier in the morning .

Because his voice had already started to break.
